Java Tool for Texture Packs
Ok, so I have a project suggestion for you, Dr A. I take it that Java is fairly good with working with directories. So Java would be the best option for this idea I have.
Basically, my Dreams of Drean texture comes with multiple textures such as:
Animated or non-animated bedrock
Animated or non-animated jukebox
Audio Cable rails or regular rails
And later on, I plan to write up multiple end stories
However, a lot of people struggle to work out how to switch textures or else they can't be bothered. So I thought it would be cool if we could develop a tool that would allow the switch to be fairly automated. Tell me if you're interested and I'll send you my concept sketches and all that. It will just require basic cut/copy and paste commands, directory access, image support and tick boxes to select the options. Think you could do this?

Possibly, at least with some research/studying on my part(and perhaps some help from friends). I will be using JFrame more than likely, as that is a common tool for gui windows and such.
Ya, I think this could be interesting to do.

Will this classify as a minecraft mod?

Kinda, if it were posted on PMC, yes, it would be put in the mods section.Rabid wrote:Will this classify as a minecraft mod?

Neither have I, so this should be pretty successful(if it's done right).Rabid wrote:Sounds good. I have not seen any mods or tools like this. (I have not seen)_Dr.A wrote:Kinda, if it were posted on PMC, yes, it would be put in the mods section.Rabid wrote:Will this classify as a minecraft mod?

Re: Java Tool for Texture Packs
Well it's a mod that would have to custom built. Pretty hard for an end user to modify and all that. However, with a basic template, it could easily be reprogrammed to work.
However, it's not technically a MC mod. More like a tool. However, due to PMC being limited in it's categories, programs/tools count as mods.
I'll get all my concept art and notes together and post them as soon as possible. I'll also help supply all the art/font/resources required.
Oh and we may have to stall with this project further down the line. I have a company (Kongo Coffee www.kongocoffee.com.pg) hiring me on to develop their company website. So I'll be up to my ears with HTML code. Yay! :3

Well first, congrats on getting hired on by to develop that website, that's the kind of thing I always wished I could get the chance to do. Also, thanks for those notes, I was actually going to ask you for something like that.

Re: Java Tool for Texture Packs
Is that enough information? I also have my folder system mapped out which I can draw up a diagram for.
Yeah, it is pretty cool that I can have a go at working on the website. The guy who owns the company will be meeting with me some time this week to go over the designs and the content they want. Pretty stoked about it actually!

Re: Java Tool for Texture Packs
That may be enough enough to go off of conceptually, but it would be nice to have some diagrams drawn up of names of files/folders and stuff like that.

Re: Java Tool for Texture Packs
Ok, I'll get a restructured texture pack compiled and sent. I'll also get those diagrams done.

Any word on if this will work or not? Oh still getting things compiled. Had to teach yesterday so I didn't have much time. Should be able to upload this afternoon.

Re: Java Tool for Texture Packs
This should work, however it won't be universal, meaning you won't be able to use this exact program for other packs, however, with some editing, it can be altered to work for other packs.

Re: Java Tool for Texture Packs
Ok, just checking. I might ask for you tweak it a bit for my Retro Pompeii texture pack but that's a bit far off.

Ok ,that should be fine. The one for your Dreams of Drean pack will still be a bit though, although I'm sure you expected that

Re: Java Tool for Texture Packs
Yes, of course! I don't expect it tomorrow.
But I finally got the folder layout done. I just need to give the actually files.
Imagine there being multiple folders. These folders would exist as such:
blocks\folderX
blocks\folderXanimated
folderX contains a static block. In other words, one that is not animated.
folderXanimated contains the animated block, along with the support animation files.
Under the blocks folder, are all the block files that Minecraft references. The added folders of folderX and folderXanimated are simply storage folders.
Let’s look at folderX and applying a static block out into the blocks folder. These instructions are local and are not taking into account the full file path.
We would first look into folderX and locate file x.png.
So that path is blocks\folderX\x.png
We copy it to our clipboard or whatever the means are and back out to our blocks folder. Under the blocks folder is another file called x.png.
Its path is blocks\x.png
Paste the copied file and replace the current file in blocks\x.png
What if we want to place the animated block into the blocks folder?
We would locate the animated block under:
blocks\folderXanimated\x.png
There is also its .mcmeta file to be copied.
blocks\folderXanimated\x.png.mcmeta
We will copy both of these files in to the directory of blocks. Replacing whatever files needed in the process.
If switching back to a static texture, we will do the same as stated above but in the process, we will need to delete the .mcmeta file.

Uploaded! Work your magic!

Note, there are some new and updated textures in this version. It's a pre-release you might say.
